SADIs

SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Switch) is an advanced type of bariatric surgery. It combines a sleeve gastrectomy with a duodenal-ileal bypass. Typically, it is done on individuals with severe obesity. It aids in weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions.

In the first part of the procedure, a sleeve gastrectomy is performed. Here a large part of the stomach is removed. This leaves a smaller, tube-like stomach. The small intestine is rerouted bypassing a large portion of it. Thus there is a smaller food intake due to the reduced stomach size. This cuts down on calorie absorption in the bypassed part of the intestine.

The benefits of SADI-S

  1. Significant Weight Loss: SADI-S offers substantial long-term weight loss by combining stomach size reduction with a rerouting of the intestines to limit calorie absorption.
  2. Improved Metabolic Health: The procedure is effective in improving or resolving conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
  3. Less Nutrient Deficiency: Compared to other malabsorptive surgeries, SADI-S carries a lower risk of nutritional deficiencies, as more of the small intestine remains intact.
  4. Single Anastomosis: The surgery involves only one connection (anastomosis) between the stomach and intestines, reducing the risk of complications.
  5. Durable Results: SADI-S provides durable and sustained weight loss results with a lower likelihood of weight regain compared to other bariatric procedures.

    Ideal candidates for SADI-S

Ideal candidates for SADI-S are people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above. Or a BMI of 35 or above. With related serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes or heart disease. These people have tried and failed to lose weight. Diet, exercise, and medication haven’t worked. They should be ready to commit to lifestyle changes. Such as lifelong diet and physical activity changes.

As with all surgical procedures, SADI-S is not without risks. There may be nutritional deficiencies and surgical problems. It may involve the need for additional procedures. A thorough assessment by a healthcare provider is necessary.

Talk to your doctor. It will help you determine if this surgical procedure is your best option.

The steps involved in a SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Switch) bariatric surgery are as follows:

    1. Anesthesia: The patient is placed under general anesthesia to ensure they are unconscious and pain-free during the surgery.
    2. Laparoscopic Access: Small incisions are made in the abdomen, and a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) along with surgical instruments are inserted.
    3. Sleeve Gastrectomy: The surgeon removes about 80% of the stomach, creating a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach that limits food intake.
    4. Duodenal Transection: The duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) is cut just below the stomach, leaving a portion connected to the stomach.
    5. Intestinal Rerouting: The lower part of the small intestine (ileum) is brought up and connected to the remaining duodenum, creating a single anastomosis (connection). This reduces the amount of intestine where nutrients are absorbed.
    6. Closure: The surgeon checks for any leaks, then removes the laparoscopic instruments and closes the incisions.
    7. Recovery: The patient is moved to a recovery area to be monitored as they wake up from anesthesia. The hospital stay is typically 2-3 days, followed by a recovery period with a specific diet and lifestyle adjustments.
